A brief history
From optical necessity to personal style.
Before acetate
Historically, spectacle frames were made from real tortoiseshell—most often the shell of the hawksbill sea turtle—prized for its warm translucency and naturally mottled grain. That material belongs to the past. Today, we preserve its visual character in modern cellulose acetate, without using animal shell.
A modern material
Cellulose-based materials brought lighter construction, richer colour and expressive scale. By the early twentieth century, mottled frames were moving from optical necessity into personal style.
An enduring code
Havana’s amber-and-brown pattern became a quiet signature: intelligent, individual and softer than solid black. Its depth changes with every cut and every light.

We select cellulose acetate from Mazzucchelli 1849, an Italian house with a material history dating to 1849.
Each sheet is cut, shaped, pinned and polished by hand in Goa. No two frames carry the pattern in quite the same way.
